Goalies Against Cancer by Andy Hurtt

In honor of my father, Barry Hurtt, who passed away from esophageal cancer, all those who fight hard against cancer and the families that love them, I have launched a fundraising campaign to benefit Sarah’s House of Maine a family support services organization. I created www.goaliesagainstcancer.org to also pay tribute to his professional dedication to cancer research and support throughout his fundraising career. Currently we are selling 1/5” helmet stickers for $5us and 3.75” stickers for $8us. All profits will be donated to Sarah’s House. The prices include First Class shipping. All transactions are through my verified PayPal business account for safe, secure transactions.

This year marks the tenth since I lost my father. He was an outgoing & compassionate man with a huge heart and amazing sense of humor. My father worked in hospital administration for decades as a fundraiser. He worked in Indiana, New Jersey/New York and Maine. While in NJ he was the Vice President of Hackensack University Medical Center in charge of fund raising. While working there he developed relationships with many donors including working directly with area sports teams like the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, Giants, Jets, Yankees, Mets. One of the significant campaigns that he developed and cultivated was the Tomorrow’s Children Fund, an organization dedicated to helping children affected with cancer. With the help of prominent individuals in the community including NY/NJ sports figures and celebrities including Don Imus and WFAN, TCF is now recognized on a global scale.

My father raised me to also have compassion and treat people with kindness. He was always supportive of me from childhood to adulthood be it in sports, education, art and music. As adults we grew even closer. I never felt that I couldn’t come to him with anything. He was always there for me during the highs and lows of life. Unfortunately he passed before I met my wife or meet our three boys, Rhys, Felix and Léon. I know that he would absolutely love them all. I have fond memories of him with my nieces when they were my boys age. I know that the boys and Grampy would have enjoyed each other very much. Although my wife never met him, I know that she sees glimpses of him in me. As a father, I often see my dad in me. I certainly see a lot of the both of us in our three boys. I will do my best to instill part of his character, compassion and sense of humor in them as he did in me.

All of the profits of Goalies Against Cancer sales will be donated to Sarah’s House of Maine located in the Grater Bangor ME area. Sarah’s House is a family support center, the region’s first and only cancer hospitality house for cancer patients and their families of northern and eastern Maine. The mission of Sarah’s House is to provide temporary lodging in a comfortable “home away from home” environment to cancer patients (and their caregivers) receiving treatments.

Tgacbackhey serve a vast area for cancer treatment, and convenient lodging is essential for those undergoing treatment. Sarah’s House not only provides an affordable place to stay, but a supportive and caring atmosphere centered around hope and healing. Referred guests are served with integrity and respect and without regard to financial resources. I feel that support services to families in need of care, counseling, room and board, etc. are often overlooked. Sarah’s house is dedicated to providing these kinds of services and more to those in need.
I have been promoting this openly through various media sources but, I am also specifically reaching out to the goaltending community because of its strength, sense of belonging and powerful reach. Often goaltenders are seen as quirky, odd or even crazy but, we are also motivated, dedicated and highly supportive of one another. With the help of such a great community, I feel that Goalies Against Cancer can be a huge success and have a significant impact.

It is also my hope to develop and expand the Goalies Against Cancer concept/branding into more communities, merchandise and expand the awareness of family support services available to those affected. I urge you to donate/purchase stickers and help spread the word. Together we can turn Goalies Against Cancer from a simple fundraiser into a strong organization that provides assistance to much needed communities. With your donations and promotion Goalies Against Cancer can play a significant part in cancer care and outreach.

Thank you
Andy Hurtt
